Polish Church leaders have defended the right of their country’s Catholic schools to refuse employment to homosexual teachers, after human rights groups called for the resignation of a government minister who spoke out on the issue. “We must defend someone’s right to declare their views and convictions publicly,” Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz of Warsaw told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily. Under both state and Church law, Catholic schools must clearly state the norms under which they take on teachers. It’s a long time since I encountered such an attack on a state official because of what they’ve said.” The archbishop was reacting to criticism of Elzbieta Radziszewska, government plenipotentiary for equal rights, after she confirmed that Catholic schools were entitled to dismiss gay or lesbian staff.

Public bodies like the police and schools will not be forced to meet centralized targets for homosexual, transsexual and religious equality, the government said in August. Instead, public sector organizations will be allowed to decide how best to implement the new equality duty rushed into law by the previous government. The Government Equalities Office said that the move marks an end to top down targets and box ticking bureaucracy, making public bodies accountable to the taxpayer rather than faceless Government officials.

The UK is facing a dramatic rise in pensioners as a record number of people turn 65 in 2012, the Government said yesterday. More than 800,000 people will celebrate their 65th birthday during the year, 150,000 more in 2011, according to the Department for Work and Pensions. The massive increase, which stems back to the post-war spike in births in 1946 and 1947, will lead to a significant rise in Government spending on the state pension.

Dr John Sentamu, a longstanding campaigner on the issue, made the appeal last weekend, starkly describing the sexual exploitation of victims as “modern day slavery”. The primate, pointing out that more than half of the 30,000 women involved in off-street prostitution in the UK are EU migrants, said: “We need a united front against the traffickers, pimps and gangsters – and speak out for those who don’t have a voice.”
