A majority of people oppose children being allowed to ‘self-define’ their gender, a poll in October found, but some respondents say they back choosing your own species. Among the 2,000 people asked, 19% backed people choosing their own age and 10% said self-declaration of species was acceptable. For people aged between 18 and 24, the figures were even more marked with nearly one in five backing self-definition of species.

More than 440 homeless people have died on the streets or in temporary accommodation in the UK in the past year, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism has found. In its latest project, Dying Homeless, it found that there were at least 449 deaths in a year – more than one each day – but that this number may not reflect the true number. Causes of death included violence, drug overdose, illnesses, and murder. The average age at death was 49 for men and 53 for women: nearly 40 per cent lower than the average life expectancy of 82 years in the UK.

The population of the UK has risen by its lowest rate for over a decade, the first official population estimates since the EU referendum show. Latest calculations show there were an estimated 66,040,229 million people living in the country at the end of June last year. Over the 12 months to the middle of 2017, the inhabitants increased by 0.6%, the lowest growth rate since mid-2004.

A Stonewall report claiming sexual abuse shelters would be unaffected by assisting men who identify as women has been fiercely attacked by a worker within the sector. The author described Stonewall’s document as “at best a disingenuous depiction” of the views of people working with abused women. At worst, she said, it could trick supporters and the public into believing that women who disagree with Stonewall “are wrongly misrepresenting female survivors of male violence”.

A survey has found that Department of Health (DoH) officials are unhappy answering questions about their sexuality, despite overseeing a policy which forces doctors to ask patients about theirs. From April next year, NHS doctors and nurses will have to ask patients over the age of 16 if they are heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, other, or unsure, regardless of the relevance of sexuality to their health complaint.

A Barnabas Fund freedom of information request has revealed that no Christians were allowed to resettle in the UK in the first three months of 2018 (from 1,358 Syrian refugee applications). Four Christians - recommended for resettlement by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) - were rejected, with only Muslims granted permission. The Home Office only made the admission after the Information Commissioner's Office threatened court proceedings.
