A Florida teacher is facing a lawsuit after forcing a 12-year-old student to call his parents for reading his Bible during free reading time, it was reported in May. Giovanni Rubeo, a student in Fort Lauderdale, brought out his Bible in free reading time and had been told to put it away by this teacher, who called his home stating that he was ‘not permitted to read [religious] books in my classroom’.

Christians are afforded less protection for their beliefs by the state compared to those who practise other religions, suggests a late April survey. Of the 2000 people surveyed exclusively for The Telegraph, nearly half thought British believers had less protection. This figure rises to 62% among those who identify as non-practising Christians. The poll also reveals that 56% see Britain as a Christian country.

Three in four Americans still believe the Bible as the word of God – 28 per cent of Americans believe that the Bible is the actual word of God and that it should be taken literally. This is somewhat below the 38% to 40% seen in the late 1970s, and near the all-time low of 27% reached in 2001 and 2009.

The Palestinian Authority has stopped including religious affiliation on national ID cards, meaning that these will no longer differentiate between Muslims and Christians, it was reported in late March. Explaining the move, the Interior Ministry said that the Palestinian Basic Law prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion or ethnicity. Hamas have criticised the move as they fear it is one step towards allowing Jewish settlers to remain in the future Palestinian state and to be citizens on equal terms with Muslims and Christians.

Tony Blair has urged a deal with Bashar Assad in Syria and further NATO involvement in Libya as part of a ‘titanic’ struggle against radical Islam. The former prime minister said the West had to focus its efforts on tackling religious extremism, insisting it lay behind most of world’s most intractable problems. Failure to shake off the legacy of Iraq and take sides’ with moderates in the Middle East and beyond could mean the 21st century is dominated by conflict rather than peaceful co-operation, he warned in a speech at Bloomberg in London.

Militant atheists should “get over it” and accept that Britain is a Christian country, according to Communities Secretary Eric Pickles. He changed the law in 2012 to ensure councils could not face legal challenges for including prayers in meetings. This weekend, he said non-believers should not impose “politically correct intolerance” on others.

Three out of ten British children have next to no understanding of the Bible and their parents aren’t in a position to educate them. So revealed a survey released last month by the Bible Society, which was founded in 1804 to spread knowledge about the Scriptures. Results suggested that most boys and girls ages 8 to 15-years-old did not know that Adam and Eve, Noah’s Ark or Jesus’ birth were found in the Bible. More than a third of the 800 children surveyed did not know that David and Goliath and the story of the Good Samaritan were Bible tales. More curiously, one in ten children believe that stories about King Midas or Icarus were in the Bible. Many of the parents who responded – the society commissioned YouGov to survey almost 6,000 adults – did see the Bible as a source of good values for their children. But almost half of them did not recognise the story of Noah’s Ark as coming from the Bible and many confused actual Bible stories with plotlines from modern books and films such as Harry Potter.

A couple who want to marry in a Church of Scientology chapel are planning their wedding after winning a “human rights” fight in the UK’s highest court. Scientologists Louisa Hodkin and Alessandro Calcioli, both 25 and from East Grinstead, West Sussex, had put the ceremony on hold after a High Court judge said services run by Scientologists were not “acts of worship”. But the Supreme Court yesterday ruled the Scientology church was a “place of meeting for religious worship”.

The Church of Scotland has insisted ‘there is still a place for strong Christian values’ in Scotland, despite new figures showing the number of Christians in the country has dropped by more than 400,000 since the millennium. However, the Moderator of the General Assembly, the Rt Rev Lorna Hood, admitted the figures made for ‘stark reading’. Statistics from the 2011 Census, released in late September, showed the number of people describing themselves as Christian was 2.85 million (53.8% of the population), a drop from 3.3million (65.2%) in 2001. The number affiliated to the Church of Scotland dropped from 2.1million to 1.7 million, or from 42.4% of the population to 32.4%. Meanwhile, the figure for people describing themselves as ‘no religion’ increased from 1.4 million (27.8%) to 1.9 million (36.7%).
