Comment: The Bombe (there were eventully 100s, mostly housed outside Bletchley Park) was not the forerunner of the modern computer. It was not programable. Colossus was the first computer, which mostly came out of the work of Bill Tutte, who worked out how the Lorenz machines worked. It was Tommy Flowers the GPO engineer, already developing telephone exchanges using valves, who designed Colossus.
