I was googling the Bill Mason Band when I stumbled upon this site - Somewhere I have the green vinyl album of "greenbelt live" contrast with "Laser Love" was on red! After the Fire were the big breakthrough act. years later, I became friendly with the brother of ATFs John Russell, Rob, who both lived near me and got to know John slightly - last time I saw him, he was playing as a duo with Rob in a local pub. one of the biggest memories of greenbelt of that era was 1980 (I'm fairly sure) seeing U2 play a free set on mainstage. I remember them playing "Fire" which was a low-charting single. we didn't realise how big they were going to get. Mike Peters/The Alarm were also around in that era and personally, I thought they were more likely to succeed than U2 - got that wrong, didn't I? The Alarm are still as fresh as back then. On the HM scene there were 100% Proof and Jerusalem; it seemed that it could get away from the Cliff-loving image. I was in awe of the main-stagers and people like Graham Kendrick, yet a few years later I was booking him for a gig. he wasn't big in secular music, but he did get intelligent lyrics into contemporary church music, as opposed to the repetitive saccharine schmalz that was threatening to drown us. David Grant who does the TV reality music shows, Sal Solo from Classix Nouveau, Giantkiller, Bryn Haworth, Larry Norman, Res Band - it was a great event at that time. The Lion Band (from some midlands city) were knocking out heavy rock covers in a tent.
