Even as far back as 1999 the Cross Rhythms scribes were struggling to classify .rodlaver (we classified their 'Trying Not To Try' album as "rock" but it could as easily have been hip-hop). Let's just say, they're a threesome from California who not only bear the name of a now retired Australian tennis giant, delight in bringing together Rage Against The Machine and the Beastie Boys rock sensibilities into underground hip-hop sounds that are sometimes stream-of-consciousness freeform efforts, sometimes a bit like Pigeon John on speed and occasionally containing all the spiritual militancy that makes most Nashville CCM sound like a humanistic tract. Rudy Nielson wrenches himself free of the stereotypical confines of West Coast rap to often make music that is truly on-the-edge. Well worth investigating.
