Young Moses appears to be a new face on the indie rap scene. I say "appears to be" as the sleeve has virtually no information and I can find nothing online. There is a brief testimony though, stating how Christ saved him from drugs and witchcraft among other things, and this features as the main theme of the lyrics. Despite 'Banging In The Spirit' obviously being a low-budget release there is some real quality here. The album fits the standard old-school West Coast rap mould with some Southern influence at times. The flawless vocals are rather let down by the production which isn't quite up to scratch, feeling flat and lifeless a lot of the time. The album works best when it is at its simplest: the quality in the straight up hip-hop of "Don't Sleep" contrasts sharply with the more ambitious "I Gotta Praise Yo Name" with its gospel vocals doesn't make it. If you still long for the golden age of early-mid '90s rap and don't mind it a little rough around the edges it could be worth your time tracking this record down.
