'Harvest' is an album of contrasts, the first three tracks by The New Songbirds include two songs "He'll See You Through" and "I'll Take Jesus" that hark back to the old gospel quartets of the '50s with uncomplicated guitar arrangements. "Time Is Getting Shorter" has a Pop Staples feel, but just as I settle into my retro listening mode, "What My Jesus Means To You" with Wynnde Vessup brings me smoothly up to date with seven minutes of modern R&B. This vibe is carried into "I Rest In You", "Harvest" and "Shelter In The Time Of Storms". Then we are whisked away to the Caribbean with the jazzy instrumental "Come" complete with steel drums in lead role as they are on "Be Thou Faithful" to close the album. There is nothing on this strangely eclectic set to take the music world by storm here but all the styles are performed competently enough.
