The chamber organ is much milder (thankfully) and more delicate an instrument than it's gargantuan cousin and here provides a beautiful and well balÂanced accompaniment to the Weelkes Anthems. All of Weelkes' melodies have a haunting and memorable beauty when deftly played by Byram Wisfield that deserves to be much more widely known and the WinÂchester Cathederal Choir do them great justice. Especially poignant are "All Laud And Praise" and the expansive counterpoint of "Laboraui In Gemitu Meo". A great deal of enjoyment was derived by me from the lyrical playing of Mr Brian Wigfield on the two voluntaries, oozing Elizabethan charm and simplicity and t the recording provides a delicate harmonic I to the choral work. The "Alleluia" is a i five parts that gives the singers little i they do battle with a tour de force of , both stirring and memorable. Possibly the tact Siat Weelkes was as much a secular com-r accounts for the catchy and melodic style of his innings, as they were grounded in the popular culture of the day. Whatever, some great music results and I don't think it could be performed better. I'll reserve one star though, just in case
