Around Christmas in the cathedrals and churches of England, this is the sort of choral music you can expect to hear - a blend of old and traditional favourites ("I Saw Three Ships", "Once In Royal", "O Come All Ye Faithful") with some newer pieces (Howells' "A Spotless Rose" and Elizabeth Poston's "Jesus Christ The Apple Tree") and a couple of organ pieces to boot. This CD was originally recorded and released in 1980 to mark the 900th anniversary of Winchester Cathedral. There's no obvious reason for the 2004 re-release. Boys' and men's voices with organ and the acoustics of ancient buildings make the English cathedral sound a particular one, and it does not appeal to everyone. (I for one would like to see the same opportunities for musicianship and spiritual development accorded to girls and women in more of our cathedrals). This collection of carols may be a good way in for those wishing to explore.
