This pleasant release is the first recording on the historic Abraham Jordan organ in St George's Church, Southall, since its full restoration to its original specifications by Mander Organs in 2009. As organ buffs will know, this is one of only a few instruments surviving from the 18th century and it has a charming and colourful sound. Organist William Whitehead (no relation to this reviewer) presents a broad survey of Restoration and Georgian English organ music appropriate to the instrument. Some names are familiar: John Blow and Henry Purcell from the Restoration period stand out. However there are some less well known composers as well, chiefly from the Georgians: Thomas Roseingrave and John Christopher Pepusch are both new to these ears and both know how to write a tune. None of the compositions are sacred but all are melodious and William Whitehead, the winner of the first prize at the Odense International Organ Competition in 2004, upholds his reputation for engaging and inspiring playing. The sound quality on the recording, courtesy of producer Gary Cole, is excellent and collectors of organ music will want to get this album. The more general music lover may find this too obscure but it is, as we have said, a pleasant and tuneful collection.
