South African born Wayne Sanders, worship leader of Cambridge's fast-growing church C3, has once again written songs that show a genuine expression of praise to God. Considering the modern church he represents it is also pleasantly surprising to hear his incorporation of lines from old classic hymns "Amazing Grace" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" in the album's final track. This album was bound to sound quite different from his independent debut 'Giver Of Life' as since then Wayne was approached by ICC Records who brought in producer Neil Costello. Compared with his first project, 'Free To Fly' offers the same rock/pop sound although Costello now adds a distinctive edge to each track. My favourite, the up-beat catchy anthem "Your Love Has Lifted Me High", has the generic rock worship approach heard throughout the album but adds influences of gospel music, undoubtedly inherited from his African roots. Slower and more reflective "Holy Are You Lord" provides a welcome breather from the energy poured into the rest of the album but penultimate track "Audience For One" is particularly fresh where, after an intro form which you expect to hear Blur's "Song 2", a rather sharp, twangy electric guitar is brought in, which wouldn't be out of place on a Status Quo track. Anyway, there is some interesting stuff on this album. I can more clearly imagine what a Sunday celebration service must be like at C3 as the congregation bops away to some exciting tunes and connects with the Lord through the heartfelt lyrics.
