As a journalist and broadcaster I was fully involved with the UK Christian music scene throughout the noughties but somehow failed to note the existence of this album when released in 2013, or indeed the existence of Vicki herself whom I have subsequently learnt is a gospel singer/songwriter based in Bedfordshire. The faults of 'Daddy' first. There are too many tracks of a similar tempo and one or two sound like musical sketches rather than finished, honed and crafted songs. Also, Vicki has a tendency to fall into the stylistic habit shown by many gospel singers, staying for too long on a riff/musical sequence on which to deliver melodic improvisations and lyrical asides. Such a musical approach can work well in concert but over the length of a full album can come across as so much grace-note excess. Now perceptive readers will have noticed that earlier I referred to Vicki as a gospel singer. Personally, I detest the music industry and, sadly, the Church's habit of calling faith-orientated music Christian music when made by Caucasians and gospel music when performed by black artists. But to me at least, Vicki is both an attractive white girl and a gospel singer - and a really good one, with technical skill in abundance and some soulful twists and turns in her phrasing. One day an international public might hear her. All she needs is a good record producer to develop her songs and she could cut a stone classic album. Here's hoping she gets the opportunity to make it.
