Reviewed by Trevor Kirk Not to be confused with the mainly quasi-gospel 'Soul Of Gospel' hotchpotch reviewed above, this is the real McCoy, with a bunch of singers and choirs drawn from the roster of the Tyscot record label based in Indianapolis, USA. The Christian Community Mass Choir get things rolling with some good old fashioned call and response; tracks by Lamar Campbell & Praise and Rev Melvin Dawson & The Genesis Ensemble keep things on the boil, and then the highlight for me, Deitrick Haddon & Unity Praise, a fusion of gospel, R&B and funk. Michael Houston is rather limp and wimpy, The Indiana State Mass Choir and Dr L S Scott & The Garment Of Praise are also lacking in ooomph, and Surrender, a four girl soul singing group, close on a downbeat note, literally: the beat kicks in after nearly three minutes of a four minute track. Truth to tell, most of this compilation is pretty ordinary, although I would only be able to decide if these selections are typical by listening to all the source albums from which these were taken. On the evidence of this, that might be a daunting task.
