The term "Singer Songwriter" has almost become a musical genre in itself, and I'm sure most people will have an instinctive idea of the type of music the CD contains. It is described as containing "songs of power and tenderness that unite fine melodies with thoughtful lyrics, reaching out into the world with a message of hope that all can relate to" and this is certainly accurate. With artists like Cathy Burton, Bryn Haworth, Paul Field, Nicki Rogers and Martyn Joseph you know the level of songwriting is going to be good before you start listening. Whether the arrangement is acoustic or a full band the songs stand out for themselves and most would be easily usable in either context. Highlights are the absolutely beautiful "Hollow" from Cathy Burton, the poignant "He Never Said" from Martyn Joseph, a song that challenges the attitudes that sadly even those in the Church can adopt, and Andy Flannagan's "Open Arms", a thankful song based on the Prodigal Son. Sometimes I feel the crossover has crossed so far that it is hard to work out quite what the message is, and despite my best efforts I actually have to admit to being totally flummoxed as to what Garth Hewitt is singing about here. But this is still an enjoyable selection of UK songsmiths.
