Base 9 are a great online store and hip-hop lifestyle label (www.base009.com). Based in California, these guys are at the cutting edge of underground sounds pushing an eclectic mix of styles throughout the whole compilation. From the soul/funked sound of Rebirth in the God-centric inspirational number "Give It To Me" to the abrasive techno vibed rapping of Bizzart in "L A Approach". But without a shadow of doubt the CD's main draw is the sound of the well known and prolific Dr Onionskin whose production skills have earned him wide respect in many quarters of the industry. The good doctor's most obvious talent is his ability to fuse the likes of old school, acid jazz and techno effortlessly, as demonstrated in the outstanding cut "Crenshaw Blvd", while the mesmeric chiller "Droppin The Mellow" and the jazzed out classic "Impressions 4u", updated takes are reminiscent of the old Blue Notes Break Beat series. Overall a good compilation that gives a clear take on a wide range of styles and skills.
