Despite this being her debut EP, British/Columbian indie folk artist Vanessa Forero is a seasoned composer having written film soundtracks and songs for others and this wealth of experience ensures that her own solo career has got off to the strongest possible start. Having been selected last year by BRIT Award-winner Beth Orton to perform at her UK shows, this offering from Forero not only showcases her incredible songwriting skills but also her multi-instrumental and self-production talents with only a handful of bit part players helping out to complete the picture. Forero reflects her South American roots by using Latino rhythms and instrumentation as the foundation for much of the EP and this gives an infectiously upbeat feel to proceedings with the opener "Heaven Knows" and "Same Boat" being cases in point. The general theme here is optimism following adversity - most notably in the triumphant "I'll Be Wrong Again" - and there is a depth to Forero's lyrics that reflects her own experiences and the strength found within. The tender "Anhela" closes a debut from an artist definitely worth watching out for.
