This is jazz with strong elements of pop thrown in, and a tasty EP it is and no mistake! Trace Elements are Canadian musicians, Trish Pye and Geoff Smith, who together make music for adults! From the opening fluid bass of "Satin" (which sounds like something Everything But The Girl might have recorded back in the '80s) through to the closing synth-filled "The Old Man Shuffle", two things stand out. Trish Pye's fine voice and (he pair's commitment to musical excellence. Though this has clear budget restrictions, there is no restriction on the creativity. "Rain" creates a mesmeric musical backing for Trish's voice to float wilh lyrics that deal with hurt and healing. Pure poetry. "Distance" takes the pace up a little and builds on top of a solid groove, but then breaks out into the most wonderful improvised piano solo. "As You Can See, I'm Up" is a late night blues tune which again highlights Trish Pye's fine voice. If you're searching for something that's a little different from your usual fare (hen Trace Elements do it for me! Personally I can't wait to hear a full album!
