The story goes something like this: Tonya, from Key West, Florida, used to travel with her minister father as he visited prisons and the inmates would become quiet so they could hear the little girl with the voice. Hence the title. The lady does indeed have a strong, clear voice but not an unusual one for an album of largely contemporary gospel. There are some good songs here, five are self-penned, one of these, "Rain", is a favourite of mine blending both the contemporary and traditional effortlessly. "None Like You", which opens the album, is the weakest offering with its opening lines not fitting too well musically. But there is also a top rate song written by Marvin Winans Sr here which, put in the hands of this diva, is pretty electrifying. All in all, a powerful debut that is sure to open doors for Tonya.
