'From The Dear Green Place' is the second album released by Bournemouth-based singer/songwriter Whitman, three years since his debut 'The Breaking In Of Light.' Described as a collection of songs which take in memories of people, places and faith, this album heads in a different direction to the previously personal lyrics which could be heard in 'The Breaking In Of Light'. The album cover, showing what appears to be a cartoon figure of Whitman gazing out the window of a train, is a good depiction of the reflective, holistic nature of this album. What stands out about Tom's particular songwriting approach is his ability to tell stories through cleverly observed images which are vivid and memorable. Most of the lyrics here are also each song is also subtly influenced by his Christian faith. Although accompanied by some hand-picked musicians, his still retains the feel of one man's musical vision while his soothing vocal style means that you drift off and enter into each story. All in all, a cohesively strong collection of original songs from a talented acoustic songsmith.
