This is a smooth, soulful album that makes excellent late night listening, musically reminiscent of someone like Lionel Ritchie at his best. However, Timothy McDonald’s excellent classy voice takes in gospel and jazz influences and is packed with emotion as he sings songs of love to his Saviour. The gentle beat of “Holy Spirit” and “Never Knew” which has a bit of a jazzy groove and some tasty backing vocals are probably the liveliest things here as Timothy seems to enjoy playing it slow and cool. Lyrics that owe a great deal to the directness of gospel have the time and space to minister to the soul. “More Than You’ll Ever Know” is an encouragement placed over a delicious ballad. The one that really does it for me is “A Love Like This” which is powerfully focussed on the amazing love of God and where Timothy seems to wring every ounce of emotion from the lyrics. Simple and beautiful. Just occasionally the budget restrictions of this independent release filter through but it just leaves me wondering what masterpiece he could create with a live band and some more money in the kitty! Overall the strength of Timothy’s voice and the strong focus of the songs make this an album that ministers. If you like sweet soul gospel, check it out.
