Liverpudlian David Tyrrell now fronts rock band The Soviet and their first offering is this plodding single track, "Square Eyes". It consists of a simple, heavy riff that provides the hook on which to hang a song about watching too much TV. Tyrrell's voice is strong and distinctive, while the tune's got a '90s indie rock feel that reminds me of Skypark and White Buffalo's Phil Campbell. Tyrrell is a Liverpool favourite and a respected songwriter, and he has worked with members of the Soviet in his past solo work. However, first impressions from this recording are that the band just don't seem tight together yet and the drumming on this track is particularly loose. It's not a bad song, but it's not particularly original either.
