The Donut Repair Club visit a (US) Christian school to sort out the kids in detention. Cue for yet more cutesy 'Jesus-loves-ya-real-good' schmaltz? No, not this time, if only because this is a selection of the best of Rob Evans from the last dozen years. For someone like me who thought "the best of Rob Evans" was a contradiction in terms, highlights like the fusion of country and western and Celtic roots "The Lost Coin" are a revelation. Arrangements are imaginative and appropriate (Jewish style for "Psalm 119:9", for instance), performances competent and committed, and the storyline well sustained. The downside is the strategy-eyed theology. I mean, the Bible is a bit more than "God's Love Letter", isn't it? And really misbehaving kids in real schools have just slightly bigger problems than the supposed hopeless cases here. The miscreants turn out to have done nothing worse than bunking off homework, stealing money (to buy chocolate), and being disrespectful. Thankfully God's love can cope with more than that. Meantime, this tape is music for innocents. It will certainly suit some children.
