Although British fans of Southern gospel music are, these days, probably more familiar with the music of the Gaithers and their friends, the Chuck Wagon Gang are highly respected in the States on account of their staying power. A couple of years ago listeners to Southern gospel music radio voted the Chuck Wagon Gang the number one gospel group of all time, ahead of illustrious groups like the Goodman Family, the Cathedrals and the Gaither Vocal Band. The Chuck Wagon Gang are in fact America's longest running and most recorded gospel group. For more than 70 years their style hasn't wavered and they have always been a family group. Shaye Truax, granddaughter of Anna Davis, the original alto, currently sings in the group. This seasonal album contains tracks culled from 'An Old Fashioned Christmas' Vols 1 and 2. Included in the track list are traditional carols such as "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This", festive standards "White Christmas" and "Silver Bells" plus newer yuletide offerings like "Home For Christmas". All these songs are given the classic Southern gospel make over that would please any fan of this traditional genre. For me, the standout tracks are the lesser-known songs such as "Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem" and "Christ Is Born", which were written in the Southern Gospel style. There can't be a better album to give to Southern gospel fans this Christmas.
