A great deal has been said in the media about the trials and tribulations of Britain's Got Talent finalist Susan Boyle from the moment she performed this already record-breaking release's title track in front of the British public and ultimately the whole world. It is gratifying then that the West Lothian singer should release such a top drawer debut album that will hopefully refocus the public eye towards her musical ability and away from her personal life. There are many things that are surprising about Susan Boyle and this album is no exception thanks to the variety of emotions contained within her vocal delivery. For instance, the sublime cover of the Rolling Stones classic "Wild Horses" alone sees Boyle swoop from fragility to strength, sorrow to defiance and back again before leaving the listener believing that she feels and means every syllable of every word with all her heart. Boyle and producer Steve Mac (Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson) have carefully chosen material that mirrors her personality as well as her aptitude with the likes of Madonna's "You'll See" and the virtually unknown "Who I Was Born To Be" reflecting something of her defiant stance against the media's stereotypical view of female pop stars. Elsewhere, the inclusion of "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" gives an indication of her church upbringing and a version of the timeless Julie London oldie "Cry Me A River" sees Susan switch genres with ease. Only a slowed-down remake of the Monkees' "Daydream Believer" misses the mark in what is an otherwise remarkable release from a woman who truly has got talent.
