Snorkel are a difficult band to pigeon hole and they'll probably like me saying that! Irish funk rock is probably a good place to start although there are a number of influences working here. Cuts like "Israel", "Give It Up" and "Come Together" arc definitely funky and like the rest of the seven tracks they are built around some effective guitar work. Where things get interesting is on "Don't Point The Finger" which has a vocal style close to rapping built around some haunting backing vocals and a solid bass groove. The overall message about the wrongs of judgemental behaviour is in your face and clearly Snorkel arc a band with much to stay. "Home" begins with a sample of MLK's famous "I have a dream" speech and then focuses on the reality of our home beyond this earth, all over a lilting calypso rhythm. Snorkel have created some interesting songs here and manage to escape the restrictions of trends to make music which is endearing and enduring. Just makes me wonder what they could possibly sound like live!
