This is the second full length release from this Dutch band following 'Falconry' in 2000 and a split EP with Indonesian black metallers Kekal earlier this year. Originally this started out as a one man project. Since the first release though, lead singer Shamgar has acquired five new members of the band including a female soprano. Much has changed since the first album. The one is much heavier, the vocals are more aggressive and the produciton has also been given a makeover. From the start, this CD just oozes quality and sounds similar to secular bands Dimmu Borgir and Agathodaimon. Tracks like "Of Slumber And Death" and the ear-shattering "And Thus It Burns" contribute to some of the more aggressive moments on the album. Then there are the slower songs, which really show off the atmosphere that this album contains. The best examples would be "A Plea For The King" and the majestic "Burying The Dead". The lyrics to this album concentrate on a war theme throughout and they compliment the music perfectly as the CD has a very sinister sound to it. Also, the female soprano really adds to several of the tracks, giving the album a more diverse quality. It's fair to say that if you like black metal then this is an essential purchase. I really can't recommend 'The War That Plagues The Lands' enough.
