Formed in 1999 by Shamgar, their vocalist and guitarist, Dutch extreme metal outfit Slechtvalk have been releasing albums regularly for some time now. Here the band chart their history in the form of a compilation with tracks taken from four previous albums. The listener can definitely hear how this band has developed from initially a very dark, black metal beginning. Shamgar's vocals are virtually spat out after sounding like they have passed through a shredder. He rasps over guttural, plodding riffs that are briefly lifted by swirling keys. Progression and development can be heard as later releases are at times almost orchestral with an operatic vocal blending with the brutal backdrop. "From Behind The Trees" is a perfect example where this works well. At times they also venture into speed metal with plenty of double peddling, as in "And Thus It Burns". One constant throughout however, is the vocal direction of the band which sticks fairly close to themes of spiritual warfare and end time scenarios. Slechtvalk are clearly a talented bunch and have built up a strong following. This album would be an excellent introduction for anyone new to Dutch heavy metal and who appreciates experimental sounds.
