Sister Wynona was 5Os phenomena, her blues and R&B-styte gospel sometimes recalling the late, great Sister Rosette Tharpe, but continually exuding a lazy effervescence. So her belated entrance into blues buff re-issue programmes is long overdue. This song-crammed CD (nearly 72 minutes of music) gives you 14 of her sides issued by Specialty plus alternate takes, demos, in fact a veritable Aladdin's Cave of gospel treasures. Brilliant sides abound though I'd recommend the swinging "I'm A Pilgrim Traveller" which resembles that old classic "St James Infirmary"; "I Heard The News" with some delicious blues guitar licks; and a couple of hot duets with Brother Joe May. Collectors of curios should investigate an untitled instrumental which seems based on the TV theme tune for 'Dragnet' or the storming version of "Our Father" with the New Bethal Baptist Church with Rev C L Flanklin (Aretha's dad) supplying the intro. Delicious gospel nostalgia
