This is an album full of surprises and variety. From the medieval sounding introduction to the multi layered harmonies in the choruses, it is hard to pin down a single style to this Brazilian five-piece. The band have their roots in power metal and sections of their album sound very similar to Dragon Force. Finger-shredding guitar solos and fast double bass drumming feature heavily. The arrangement of the tracks is at times almost orchestral, reminiscent of early Tourniquet releases. The album is highly technical and the musicianship is accomplished although at times the band's overall sound is let down by some strained vocals. Lyrically Scelerata introduce spiritual themes and make no attempt to hide their faith. Subjects as varied as genetic engineering and spiritual warfare are tackled. I enjoyed the musical surprises throughout the album and in particular the accordion solo on "Endless". If you're not put off by the quirky addition of a range of unusual instruments and keyboards to your metal, Scelerata should provide you with some entertaining listening.
