'Sounds Awesome' is a brave title as it gives critical critics an easy way in, along the lines of "Oh no it doesn't." However that would not be true for this release. The organ at Canterbury Cathedral was built by Henry Willis in 1886 and indeed does sound awesome. Organists will appreciate being reminded of the specifications that are given in the CD booklet. Robert Crowley is director of music and chapel organist at St George's School, Harpenden and this is his fifth contribution to the Lammas 'Sounds' series. He is undoubtedly a talented player and has recently been made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. The featured composer is Alan Ridout (1934-1996) with five of his works, most notably "The Seven Last Words". We get two pieces by Humphrey Clucas, his "Psalm Prelude" and the "Symphony For Organ" which was written for Crowley. Both were recorded in the presence of the composer. Then we conclude with "Pastorale And Fughetta" by Peter Wishart (1921-1984) and "Cyprus Dances" by Humphrey Searle (1915-1982). If you like modern British organ music this indispensable but for the general listener it may well prove to be an acquired taste.
