This compilation was released in 2006 but somehow escaped the Cross Rhythms review net until now. If you've vaguely heard of the American folk-orientated singer/songwriter who died tragically in 1997 but are still to catch up with his music, this budget line item is a useful place to start. The 10 tracks here range from 1982's "Sing Your Praise To The Lord" through to 1996's "We Are Not As Strong As We Think We Are" and one or two are absolute gems. Pride of place goes to the opener "Creed" from the late great's 'A Liturgy, A Legacy And A Ragamuffin Band' (1993). If you've never heard Mullins' masterful interpretation of the Apostles' creed with its haunting hammered dulcimer arrangement and its stunning lines "And I believe what I believe/Is what makes me what I am/I did not make it, no it is making me/It is the very truth of God and not/The invention of any man," this compilation is a must. It could well be the first step to investigating the songsmith's entire catalogue.
