As someone who fields many phone calls from concert organisers looking for bands who play "pop dance music a bit like The Tribe or Shine", I'm delighted at the emergence of this new crew from Manchester. In fact, The Tribe's studio maestro Zarc Porter gave a hand in putting this debut together. So it's hardly surprising that I can report that the debut from Overtone is well worth investigating. I liked the dance stomper "Shining Sun" with engaging vocals from Rachel Lindley and Ellie Boner with the same purity of tone that makes Lucy Britten such an exceptional dancefloor diva (I even dug the vocoder-littered Big Cheese Mix of the song which probably says something about my lack of cred with the clubbing cognoscenti). I enjoyed "All These Lies" and its effective rapping. I even found myself enjoying the rock cut "Looking For Love" though the ballad "Open Your Eyes" didn't cut the mustard. Oh, and singer Sarah Welch on the voice and acoustic closer clearly has awesome chops. As I said, one to investigate.
