It's a brave new artist who steps into the CD-clogged waters of today's music scene with a live recording but that's just what Olwen has done with this set, recorded at the Chapel Royal, Brighton in March last year. The lass says that her music "has folk, jazz and contemporary influences" and you couldn't argue with that, her wistful tones conveying an appealing mood of gentle retrospection while the accompaniments - Mark Edwards (the hugely talented producer) on keys, Kevin Jamieson (Paul Oakley) on bass, Matt Weeks (Cathy Burton) on guitar and Calum Rees (Vineyard) on drums - offer fluid, beautifully considered accompaniments. The 12 self-written songs here are strong on melody and lyrically simple expansions of biblical themes particularly God's love and grace. All in all, beautifully executed.
