For some reason I'd shied away from Mylon LeFevre's albums, but that's changed with 'Crank It Up' (it's something of a misnomer, you can still enjoy it without bleeding ears). 'Crank It Up' has all the hallmarks of American rock - chunky guitar parts, larger-than-life backing vocals, driving drums and bass that's far enough up in the mix to permeate doors, floors, walls etc., plus lots of tasty phrases that set this apart from a "let's annoy Mom" rock album. To aid the deaf and the casual listener Star Song have printed the lyrics on the in-lay card. The lyrics are good Christian rock lyrics, not cringe-making cliches, so they will only embarrass your non-Christian friends for the right reasons. The only area that lets the album down is the production on some tracks. There is a distinct lack of separation, largely due to the meaty bass end, and as a result Mylon's voice is held back. I know this is a desperately subjective assessment but for me it just doesn't sparkle. Good stuff.
