It's unbelievable that it's over 10 years between this and her last solo album, the Prince-produced 'The Voice'. Mavis' core audience, and a good cross-section of gospel music lovers, should enjoy this more rootsy offering of uplifting, socio-tipped and plain gospel songs. The Staples Singers' lead vocals echoes of her group's old days, particularly on the title track, the socio-tipped "Ain't No Better" and the funky "I Still Believe In You". Also echoing of The Staples' crossover period of the '70s is Mavis' ode to her late father "Pops Recipe". "God Is Not Sleeping" is an emotional, slow-paced gospeller with all the raw emotionalism of a Dorothy Love Coats whilst "There's A Devil On The Loose" provides an upbeat, real way down South churchy experience. Mavis, who co-wrote and co-produced several tracks here, must be a blues fan, as evidenced by tracks such as "Step Into The Light". Timeless music from a true musical giant.
