Perhaps because Martyn Layzell's role at Soul Survivor Watford is primarily as assistant pastor, his output and reputation as a songwriter and worship leader has grown more slowly than his colleague Tim Hughes, or Matt Redman before him. Martyn shared the credits with Tim Hughes on 'Reward' (1999) and his songs have featured on various Soul Survivor albums, but 'Lost In Wonder' is the first full solo album. Produced by Mike Busbee, who was also behind Matt Redman's last album, this is part recap on Martyn's earlier songs: "When Words Are Not Enough (I Surrender All)", "Devoted", "King Jesus I Believe" and "You Opened Up My Eyes" (I wonder where that line come from); and part showcase for new material, including the title track, which made it into this year's Spring Harvest songbook. Stylistically, in lyrical content/emphasis and in vocal style, it's very much what one comes to expect from the Soul Survivor stable - maybe one day they'll do something that really surprises me. Thousands go for this pop rock worship genre though, so who am I to criticise?
