Please excuse me while I engage Wayne's World mode... "What a babe!" Sorry about that, I will now revert to an impartial reviewer. "Maria McKee goes indie!", proclaimed the reviewer of this album in Q. Well, not quite, really. This is more in the field of Alanis Morrisette and why not? After all, Maria, and Ashley Cleveland after her, has been producing rock by women with a streak of fire long before Alanis, Joan Osborne and their like arrived under the banner of Angry Young Women Of Rock. Just listen to "Wait Til We Get Home" from Lone Justice's 1985 debut. Lyrics mostly explore relationships and, like many albums at the moment, the problems that relationships bring. However, there are some interesting lyrics like the confessional "Carried" and "Smarter" which includes the intriguing "Jesus Christ came down from the aerial/Trans-mission, He was all there/His perfect love left her nonplussed/She said 'I've been there'." Best track is the touching benediction title song which builds into the final "Afterlife". Nothing else quite as catchy as Ms Morrisette's singles but fans of Alanis should investigate.
