If there is one thing that stands out in hip-hop, it's the wise advice from Mos Def who answer the question "where is hip-hop going" by replying, "ask yourself where you're going" (paraphrase). Newcastle artist Mainz is a true hip-hop artist in that he's simply being himself and allowing his music to flow from his heart - saying it like it is. With his own production and musical skills added to the superb vocals from Perusi, it's a tight and very laid-back mix. There is no pretence of being a rap gangsta, but instead these are two tracks with an engaging, amusing - and then earnest, underground flow. "J Reg Metro" is a great title track with a fun and catchy hook, while "Goodthing" is a more reflective and thoughtful track. I'm looking forward to hearing this gifted MC's album debut 'Battle Of Witts'.
