The wife of a UK-based pastor, with a background in university campus bands and jazz, I approached this project with considerable expectation. Was it going to give us some funky gospel currently electrifying many a black majority congregation? Or maybe it would be a European/African synthesis with some of the fire of Afro Gospel to lift the old, old story? Neither. The music here is...would you believe it...a particularly cornball variant of country and western with stilted arrangements, not helped by a rather clumsy drum machine and songs which stay within the seriously predictable ("What A Friend", "Because He Lives", "Rock Of Ages"), Lola's voice is smooth and easy on the ear but I doubt whether such a stylised country gospel will find much of a following, even among hardcore stetsons.
