For the last decade-and-a-half, Kutless, formed in 1999 in Portland, Oregon, have enjoyed considerable CCM success first as a hard music band but then switching to become part of the modern worship movement. This album is a mixture of covers and reworkings of original material all favouring large scale worship gatherings. The opening track "Your Great Name" really sets the tone, worshipful and tuneful with a laidback pace and thoughtfulness about it. Track two is a reworking of the fan favourite "My Strong Tower" done in a similar vein as is track three "King Of My Heart". Next up is Hillsong Worship's "Cornerstone" restructured and reconfigured into a three-minute rock anthem, which surprisingly works and loses nothing in the editing. The much-loved worship tracks "Great Are You Lord" from All Sons & Daughters and the Phil Wickham classic "Your Love Awakens Me" are both performed with aplomb. Some fans of the band might still want Kutless to return to a harder edge and others might object to them featuring so many covers. From my viewpoint though I think Kutless have struck a fine balance and produced an album well worth investigating.
