The self-titled debut from Kutless earned the Portland, Oregon, rockers the distinction of being the fastest selling new artist in Tooth & Nail’s history. Now with their new set the group have clearly raised the bar. There is enough full throttle guitar work to keep it (just) within the hard music category but there are also plenty of melodic sensitivity to show that the band aren’t simply heroes of the mosh pit. The title track is acoustic-led and shows the band at their most pop friendly with a radio friendly chorus and a memorable melody. For those looking for a greater testosterone charge, “Treason” is a bitter rocker featuring searing guitar chords and electronically treated drums. The band don’t shy away from direct spiritual declaration with the graphic “Passion” and the emotionally sweeping “It’s Like Me” hitting home. Not dissimilar at times to Linkin Park, Kutless’ second album shows a maturing group clearly carrying a heart for ministry.
