An offering from Californian husband and wife duo Kirk and Joni Bovill technically and stylistically hits the spot, well served by full-bodied vocals from both. The album kicks off with a fine rock number “Let Go” but then goes on to make clear its intentions with the next song “Hold On” - entirely changing tack - a hip, funky gospel number. Hence, it's pretty clear from there on in - this couple intend to be as eclectic as they can get away with, jazz, reggae, blues - you name it, they've got something like it on here. But there lies the rub. The different styles don't quite work together and it is hard to find a common strand - you could be forgiven for thinking it was a compilation - and as a result both lyrics and music generally struggle to find their depth - there are too many changes in style to comfortably settle in to the album. Having said that, there are some great tunes; as well as the aforementioned first two: “Know You Well”, “That Is Why” and “You Are My Rock” as well as their excellent takes on timeless standards “The Lord's Prayer” and “Amazing Grace”. It would be great to hear more from them in the future - they just need to reduce the range of styles they have a crack at.
