From North Uist in the Western Isles of Scotland come Kharis, a three-piece guitar/vocal team, making their recorded debut here. I'm not sure what the aims behind recording were, but despite the undoubted good intentions, a raft of weaknesses become instantly apparent. The songs are accompanied only by guitar and the odd washy keyboard, which makes for far too little variety in arrangement and means that every song sounds the same. The vocals, while earnest, are shrill and not always in tune. I regret to say that as it stands, Kharis should never have put these songs onto CD. The material needs more imagination in writing, arrangement and performance. It pains me to say it, but it also pains me to listen to it. Sorry.
