Kenna seems poised for a real shot at the big time. Tours with Justin Timberlake, Dave Gahan and N.E.R.D.; production and remix duties with Ashlee Simpson and Kings Of Leon; Grammy Awards nominations and the opening slot of the American leg of Live Earth certainly point to an artist on the rise. His record sales however, do not correspond to his celebrity fanbase and exposure so there is pressure on Kenna to deliver. Part of his problem may be in his diversity and experimentation. His music is an eclectic stew of dance, electro-pop, hip-hop and indie rock, which works better than it might sound, without finding an identity in any particular genre. His voice has a pleasant timbre and is perfectly suited to mainstream success. "Out Of Control" is a piano-led stomp which compares favourably to many recent chart hits of a similar ilk. "Baptised In Blacklight" is the most obviously spiritual song, although there are Christian themes running through many of the tracks. The eclecticism throughout the album does detract from its overall impact, but if Kenna can find a bit more focus in his writing, then commercial success is surely within reach. Take this opportunity to discover an artist before he breaks out.
