It's easy to become something of a musical snob when approaching an album by a 16 year old singer. But in truth this is a highly impressive set from a young lady with a clear vocal ability to be in for the long haul. Producer/songwriter Aaron Rice has given Katelynne a varied bunch of songs ranging from the pumping dance music of the title track to the sunny, atmospheric pop of "Smile". The press release accompanying this album claims that Katelynne's message is of "integrity, empowerment and accountability" and I think that sums it up pretty well. "One Girl" is about making your voice heard in the crowd; "Me" talks about submitting to God's plan for your life; while "Prove 'em Wrong" is about a relationship in which there are plenty of outsiders saying it can't possibly work. With lyrics and music targeted so acutely at the concerns and romantic obsessions of teenage girls, older listeners might struggle to connect with the album. But in its own way this is cleverly crafted and nimbly executed music which is light years away from the excess thrown at today's youth by an out of control pop industry.
