Coming out of the same Glasgow church as Superhero, Josh Owen and Sam Gallagher have put together their debut album as part of a project for Destiny College, the Bible college where they are studying. Not the first album I've heard that was recorded in a bedroom but definitely one of the best! The duo have created an eclectic mix of guitar-driven praise songs, a range of creative instrumental pieces and some gentler vibey tunes. The opening songs sound like they could have come from one of Hillsong's United albums with their blistering guitar attack but by the time we get to "You Reign", things start to calm a little. Although the upbeat songs are fun, I think the album's best moments are when they stretch things out. The movement from the moody "Breather" to the celebration of the instrumental "Tartan Banquet" is one such moment. The instrumentals also give you an opportunity to hear that Josh Owen is a fine guitar player. One absolute highlight for me is the excellent "Jesus, You Are My Saviour" with its complicated time signature and vocals from Sally Cooper. Another is the closing eight minute epic "Secret Place" which is a glorious devotional song packed with atmosphere. Occasionally the boys' vocals are a little wobbly but overall, this is good stuff.
