Bach was such a prolific composer that a single CD can barely begin to explore his depths. This is a good collection and, at the super-budget price of all Naxos CDs, is outstanding value. For total beginners this is a sensible introduction; those with a selection of Bach already on their shelves may appreciate this as a compilation, and experts might enjoy comparing the different performances on offer. The opening and closing tracks, for example, are both “Goldberg Variations” played by Chen Pi-hsien. There are better versions on the market but these performances are perfectly acceptable and outstanding value for money. Sorry to keep on about the cost but, with so much Bach out there, we need to stretch our pounds as far as possible. Most of this collection is instrumental but there are some vocal extracts including parts of the “St Matthew Passion”, and the “Magnificat In D”. The liner notes are clear and concise with full source details so you can extend your collection. Please do so.
