This is the third independent release from Dallas, Texas-based singer/songwriter Joey, though the first to make it into the hands of Cross Rhythms. He sites Jeff Deyo Matt Redman and Travis as influences, and it would be easy to add Coldplay and Paul Oakley to that. An obviously British sound anyway, which would surely go down well this side of the big pond if folk get to hear this independent release. The inventive guitar sounds, riffs and jangly melodies are a strong feature of the album too, providing character and substance to the songs. More substance than some of the lyrics anyway, which at times lack direction and focus. The memorable melodies make up for much of that and lead the listener to hum the harmonies rather than recite the rhymes. Joey is undoubtedly at his best during the moments of worship towards the end of the eight track effort: "Face Of Grace" with the REM mandolin motif and frantic guitar solo, and "Speaks Aloud" with the delicate acoustic introduction leading to an invitation for the whole world to join the song. This is a fine release, showing that talent and creativity can rise above the smallest of recording budgets.
