Reviewed by Tom Lennie New house, new job, new music CD - it's all happening for recently-wed Jamie Cernik, worship leader at the Riverside Centre, a large Christian fellowship in Derby. Jamie's been writing worship songs for his congregation for some time, and this EP contains five of his finest. The songs are pleasant and worshipful and Jamie is supported on vocals and acoustic guitar by an accomplished team of musicians who deliver a good, full sound. The first three tracks, though certainly appealing, carry a sound that is just a tad predictable, as might, indeed, be suggested by their titles - in the vein of numerous other British worship leaders (Jamie cites Redman, Hughes and Townend as being among his influences). Amongst these, "I Am Saved" is the punchiest number, an energetic expression of totally abandoned praise. "Adoration" holds more of a fresh edge, with a drawing, heart-yearning chorus, while "In The Presence Of The King" takes a hymn-like structure with fine lyrics. Although family member Matt Cernik ably did all the recording, producing and mixing work, the lot was sent to Lou Fellingham in Brighton for mastering touches. A worthy debut offering - a full length album in the not too distant future will be welcome.
